How to make soy candles
The process involved in making candles out of soy wax is basically the same as that in producing paraffin-based candles. For your tools you will need a double-boiler, thermometer, wire whisks, and a glass measuring cup. Materials are soy wax, containers or molds, wicks, fragrance oils, and various coloring dyes. Pure soy wax is suitable only for container candles. Unless you want some additives included in the soy wax, they are not suitable for votive or pillar candles. The first step is to heat the wax in the double boiler which is nothing more than a small pot where the wax is placed within a bigger pot containing water. The ideal temperature for melting is 150÷°F. You can exceed 150÷°F, up to a maximum of 180÷°F, as long as you do not do stay beyond it too long, otherwise you risk burning the wax.
When the wax is melted you can add a coloring dye of your choice. Mix the dye using the wire whisks then remove the boiler from the heat source. It is at this point that you should add the fragrance oil at a ratio of 1.12 ounces fragrance to a pound of soy wax. Take care to stay within this ratio if you do not want the fragrance to bleed through to candle.
Pour the wax into your jar for container candles. Put the wick in before the wax cools and solidifies and allow it to cool on its own. Accelerating cool down could crack the candle.
